‘It’s a thrilling piece, which shows off Khan at his off-kilter storytelling best.
‘With this arresting take on an episode from the Mahabharata, Khan creates an epic theatrical space and a battleground’
‘this is a little firecracker of a show, one that really stays with you and grows in the memory.’
‘Khan’s choreography is a prowling, painful, pungent blend of Indian kathak and western contemporary dance’.
Multi award-winning choreographer and dancer Akram Khan MBE will present the world premiere of Until the Lions – his highly anticipated new production at the Roundhouse.
As one of the dance world’s most respected figures, Khan has created an influential body of work, collaborating with an impressive range of performers and artists including Juliette Binoche, Sylvie Guillem, Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Nitin Sawhney. Khan’s work for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was met with unanimous acclaim.
For his debut on the Roundhouse stage, Khan has adapted part of poet Karthika Naïr’s book Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata, an original reworking of the epic Mahabharata. Combining the Indian classical dance form kathak with contemporary dance, Until the Lions will explore themes of gender and sexuality, and the changes that time forces on the body in what is set to be his most spectacular production to date.
For this very special work, Khan will reunite with some of the artistic collaborators behind his Olivier Award winning production DESH including visual artist Tim Yip, lighting designer Michael Hulls, writer Karthika NaÏr and dramaturge Ruth Little.
