The Dark Side of Love

26 Jun 2012 - 8 Jul 2012 / Dorfman Hub

For many of Shakespeare’s most tragic characters, love represents not an ascent into heavenly bliss, but a descent into hellish despair. So it’s fitting that Brazilian director Renato Rocha will be staging his exploration of Shakespeare’s most painful and poignant moments deep in the Dorfman Hub space beneath the Roundhouse.

Featuring scenes from Hamlet, Othello and Romeo and Juliet and performed in promenade by a cast of London and Brazilian teenagers, The Dark Side of Love is an intense and atmospheric experience with stunning digital projections. The audience are encouraged to lose themselves in the action, whilst the characters lose themselves in the most extreme of emotions as they search for the light of love glimmering through the darkness.

"The young performers are astonishing: volatile but never out of control, searingly passionate and yet always forensic." The Guardian

"...promenade Shakespeare mash-up...performed with undeniable energy and talent."
Time Out

"Intensely performed, smartly staged...design, music, choreography, lighting and video all fuse together to sustain the spell." The Times

"Immensely evocative... the performances are impressive and bravely intimate..." Financial Times

"Simultaneously ethereal and edgy, traditional and modern...a feast of music, dance, projections and lighting." Whats On Stage

"An emotive 45 minutes that reminds us how fragile our lives and loves are." A Younger Theatre

"Clever, beautiful and gross and definitely worth seeing." Spoonfed

"Powerful stuff, strikingly performed." British Theatre Guide

"Visceral, powerful and inventive." Exeunt
