RSC: King Lear

RSC: King Lear

21 Jan 2011 - 4 Feb 2011 / Roundhouse Main Space

The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to the Roundhouse with a ten-week season of eight acclaimed Shakespeare productions including King Lear.

Toppled by pride and stripped of all status, King Lear heads into the wilderness with a fool and a madman for company. Shakespeare's great tragedy peels away the trappings of society to reveal the unforgiving truth of the human condition.

'David Farr's production is a masterpiece of theatrical fluency. A dauntless performance from Greg Hicks as King Lear provides the centrepiece of the play. Hicks has a magnificent voice, richly modulated and full of resonance. Gripping, inventive and assured.'
Whatsonstage*****

'Proves Greg Hicks to be an actor in the first Shakespearean rank.'
Guardian  ****

'David Farr’s excellent new King Lear with Greg Hicks. In an unforgettable cliff-top scene, in a haze of sunlight, his Lear stands crowned with wild flowers. Fantastical, comical and heartbreaking.'
Independent on Sunday

'Kept me on my mental and emotional toes throughout'
Times ****

'With actors like Darrell D'Silva as an unusually vivid Kent, and Kelly Hunter and Katy Stephens, both tremendous as Goneril and Regan, the ensemble is in good shape'
