From recording crisp audio on set to editing, sound design, mixing, and final delivery, you will learn how to build professional film soundtracks. 

Using real film excerpts and hands-on exercises, this project introduces you to the industry-standard workflows and tools used in professional film and TV post-production houses.

Do I need any particular skills or experience to take part?

This course is designed for individuals who already have basic experience with audio production and want to deepen their post-production skills.

This programme is a great next step if you have:

  • Completed entry-level creative training (such as the Roundhouse’s Behind the Lens programme).
  • Taken a similar youth media course.
  • Studied a practical media course at sixth form or college using prosumer or professional audio gear.

Programme breakdown

Session 1: Recording Sound for Film (Location Audio) 
  • The audio workflow: Overview of film sound workflows from pre-production to final export. 
  • On set recording: Capturing dialogue, sound effects and background ambience. 
  • Technical understanding: Working with microphones and recording setups, understanding production sound challenges and recording techniques in different environments. 
Session 2: Intro to Pro Tools & Dialogue Editing
  • Master the Industry Standard: Introduction to Pro Tools, session templates and file organisation
  • Syncing to Video: Working with video formats 
  • Dialogue Editing: Learn basic cleanup, checkerboard editing, fades, levels, and syncing.
  • Audio Repair: Introduction to noise reduction and audio restoration tools to fix damaged audio. 
Session 3: Sound Effects (SFX) & Sound Design
  • Editing to Picture: Sourcing, layering, and cueing sounds perfectly to on-screen action.
  • Building Atmosphere: Creating backgrounds, hard FX, and production soundscapes.
  • Intro to Sound Design Principles: Audio processing, pitch manipulation, and creating bespoke cinematic audio.
Session 4: ADR & Foley Recording
  • ADR Workflows: Recording studio voice-overs, narration, and Automated Dialogue Replacement.
  • The Foley Studio: Hands-on techniques for recording footsteps, cloth, body movement, and props.
  • Syncing Audio: Cueing, editing, and blending Foley tracks seamlessly with production audio.
Session 5: Audio Mixing & Final Delivery
  • The Final Mix: Balancing dialogue, music, Foley, and sound effects.
  • Surround Sound & Formatting: Introduction to mixing formats (including 5.1 surround sound).
  • Creative Processing: Using EQ, compression, reverb, panning, and automation.
  • Industry Specifications: Preparing and exporting audio for cinema, TV, broadcast, and online streaming.
