RSC: Antony and Cleopatra

RSC: Antony and Cleopatra

8 Dec 2010 - 30 Dec 2010

The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to the Roundhouse with a ten-week season of eight acclaimed Shakespeare productions including Antony and Cleopatra.

Two charismatic and powerful leaders find in each other an irresistible and unattainable equal. Caught between desire and duty their affair will shake the foundations of the known world. Power politics and passion collide in Shakespeare’s captivating tragedy.

'Michael Boyd’s new staging of Shakespeare's darkest tragedy is a beautifully acted triumph. Kathryn Hunter is in sensational form. Darrell D’Silva’s Antony marvellously captures the character’s old ruffian recklessness and his warm, flawed humanity. One of the funniest and fastest-moving productions of the play I have seen.'
Daily Telegraph ****

'Pacey, lucid and energetic'
Times ****

'Hunter gives us an Egyptian queen who is small, mercurial and witty. Wickedly funny'
Guardian

'The RSC's ensemble also continues to grow in strength with fine performances from John Mackay as a tense, insecure Octavius and Brian Doherty as a brisk, soldierly Enobarbus.'
Guardian

'Hunter, a splendidly volatile performance. I found her refreshingly different, and D’Silva equally riveting to watch. His Antony is at first the Antony one expects, commanding and generous.'
Times

'Brian Docherty is outstanding as Enobarbus – clear, engaging and commanding. John Mackay (Caesar), Charles Aitken (Ventidius) and Adam Burton (Scarus) all impress with some rounded and polished characterisations.'
