The World Shakespeare Festival comes to the Roundhouse with a major new cycle of Shakespeare’s plays produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, a spectacular circus infused production from Brazil and newly created production performed by teenagers in the underground performance space beneath the Roundhouse’s Main Space.
The season opens with Brazilian company BufoMecânica with their spectacular Two Roses for Richard III, a circus and multimedia based piece responding to Shakespeare’s Histories. Following the sell out seasons in 2008 and 2010 the RSC return to the Roundhouse with What Country Friends is This?, a cycle of plays including The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night and The Tempest exploring themes of shipwreck, exile and migration. One of the performers with BufoMecânica, Renato Rocha, will also direct a company of teenage performers in The Dark Side of Love. Performed in the Roundhouse’s underground performance space, it will be a dreamlike journey into the depths of what we do for love.
"An imaginative bardic blockbuster, presenting an ensemble company in plays that concern shipwrecks, love, grief and family reunions." Daily Telegraph****
"The RSC hits its stride with Shakespeare's Shipwreck Trilogy: three plays about sea storms, separation and survival. It is fascinating to follow the links between the plays." Guardian****
"This is a revelatory tripling of Shakespeare’s shipwreck plays, beautifully executed to reveal the power of Shakespeare’s sea." Metro****
