Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto to premiere a new piece at Short Circuit Festival.

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the german electronic label Raster-Noton have confirmed a line up for the opening night of Short Circuit and a specially created sound piece will link the raster-noton and Mute events. the Raster-Noton / Mute Sound Halo will consist of sound loops created by artists from both labels and will play overnight from 12 may to 'warm up' the space for the Mute event.

The line up for raster-noton’s event features the premiere of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's new piece, plus performances from Anne James ChatonGrischa Lichtenberger, Atom TM, Byetone and Robert Lippok.

Byetone

Opening with the world premiere of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamotos fifth collaborative release on Raster-Noton. An unusual creative partnership between the oscar-prize honored film composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and the fine artist and electronic music pioneer Carsten Nicolai. Passages of sparse yet emotionally charged and passionate piano solos embedded in sine waves, glitchy percussions and throbbing bass pulses – contemplative and minimal.

Uwe Schmidt, the German-Chilean grand senor (coconut) is performing an exclusive live-set under his moniker atom™. With his umpteen stage names (atom heart, lassique bendthaus and many more) he combined entertainment and exceptional electronic music for over 20 years.

Byetone's live-sets might be even more literally aiming towards the club imbued with archaic beats, feedbacks associated to guitars and extreme frequencies. Byetone creates a hypnotic trip by combining sound and real-time visualizations which should act as light effects and abstract logos.

Studio Theatre
Anne James Chaton
Robert Lippok (please note this performance is replacing Mark Fell)
Grischa Lichtenberger

In the context of a human beatbox, Anne James Chaton developed a multipolar body of work, based on a close study of textual materials which make up everyday life of contemporary society. This "poor" literature, known as "ephemera" is the source of Anne-James' quests into sound and poetry.

Grischa Lichtenberger, the youngest artist on the label, polishes up a sound palette which comes from mundane domestic field recordings. With them he creates crisp, angular constructions which ring like tinnitus in the upper registers and twitch like parkinson's in the bass.

Originally founded by Olaf Bender, Frank Bretschneider and Carsten Nicolai in 1996, Raster-Noton soon evolved to an internationally renowned and well accounted network of artistic positions in the fields of electronic music, minimal design, experiment and art. Over the last decade the catalogue reads extremely well: in addition to releases by its protagonists – carsten nicolai a.k.a. alva noto / olaf bender a.k.a. byetone / frank bretschneider a.k.a. komet and all of them together as signal – there are quite a few well-known artists and collaborations involved such as cosey fanny tutti, ryoji ikeda (cyclo.), wolfgang voigt, elph, max ernst, mika vainio (pan sonic, Ø), carl michael von hausswolf, blir (snd), william basinski, ryuichi sakamoto and many more. besides, the label has been well acclaimed for its fetish artwork, its showcases and ‘temporary spaces’, for which they also have received several awards.

Tickets: £15 - £35 - please note, downstairs tickets are seated around cabaret-style tables. Upstairs are balcony seating.
Doors: 7pm

Under 16s to be accompanied, under 14s accompanied and in seated areas only.
