young people rehearsing for a play

Performance Makers Lab

Ages 18-25

Got a performance idea scribbled in a notebook or living in the back of your mind? Maybe it’s a concept for a play, a spoken word set, or a bit of experimental theatre, but you’re not sure what the next step is?

Forget “perfect” or “finished.” The Performance Makers Lab is a three-day programme for you to play-test your ideas with other Roundhouse alumni.

You’ll receive feedback from expert tutors and fellow creative peers, alongside workshops on how to pitch your work. You’ll learn how to draft a proposal and articulate your artistic vision within the industry.

What to expect

  • Zero Pressure: You don’t need a script. Just bring an idea you’re curious about.
  • Industry Chats: Spend time with professional makers who’ve been where you are.
  • Friendly Feedback: Chat through your vision with the Roundhouse team in a relaxed environment – think of it as a professional “check-in” rather than a formal panel.
  • Free Studio Space: Use Roundhouse Works space during the project to work on your idea ahead of the final mock panel.

Who it’s for

  • For intermediate to advanced performance makers aged 18-25.
  • You must have previously or currently be taking part in a Roundhouse Performing Arts Programme (e.g. Centre 59, Poetry Collective, Wax Lyrical, Theatre or Poetry Drop In) – or you were a performance maker on the Roundhouse Creative Business Accelerator Programme.
  • Come with a performance idea. Your performance might be in the art forms of theatre, spoken word, dance, cabaret, circus, or something else entirely!

I’M NOT SURE I CAN AFFORD TO TAKE PART…

If you need help to pay for things like project fees, transport or childcare, we can help. Find out how you can get support. If you are using a bursary to pay for the project, please ensure you arrange this with the Advice Base with plenty of time before the start of the project.

I HAVE ADDITIONAL NEEDS. WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE?

We are committed to supporting D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse young people, those with medical conditions, access requirements or any lived experience that may require adaptation, support or sensitivity. If there is anything you would like to let us (our youth workers, tutors or staff) know that will support your enjoyment and access, you can do so by emailing us at advicebase@roundhouse.org.uk, and we will contact you to discuss further how to best support your engagement.
