The Roundhouse wholeheartedly welcomes today’s publication of Building a World Class Curriculum for All, Professor Becky Francis’s major review of the national curriculum and assessment in England, to which we were proud to contribute.
We’re inspired by the Government’s commitment to strengthening creative education, including plans to give arts GCSEs equal status alongside humanities and languages, and to guarantee every student meaningful access to cultural experiences. These changes represent a bold step towards a more balanced, inclusive and inspiring education system for all young people.
The Roundhouse is the UK’s largest non-formal creative centre for young people, working in partnership with schools and colleges and delivered through youth work. For nearly two decades, the Roundhouse has seen first-hand how access to the arts can unlock confidence, build essential skills and improve wellbeing. Over 10,000 young people come through our doors every year to experience opportunities and learn new skills from music, media and performance, gaining the tools and belief to shape their own futures and career choices.
Marcus Davey CBE, CEO and Artistic Director of the Roundhouse, said:
“This announcement marks a huge moment for creative education in England. We know that when young people are given the chance to create, perform and express themselves, it can change their lives. We’re proud to have contributed to the review and to see creativity recognised as a fundamental part of every child’s learning.”
As we continue to champion young talent through our programmes and performances, today’s announcement gives renewed energy to our mission to make creativity accessible to all young people and to help the next generation of artists, makers and thinkers thrive.
