Sir Torquil Norman CBE (1933 - 2025)

Sir Torquil Norman CBE (11 April 1933 – 19 March 2025) was a businessman, philanthropist, toymaker and the Founder and former Chair and President of the Roundhouse.

Torquil studied Law and Economics at Cambridge and Harvard. He went on to work as a banker for over 10 years at JP Morgan and Company in New York and at Philip Hill, Higginson Erlanger’s in London, followed by a further five years as General Manager of Mineral Separation Ltd, a large industrial holding company. In 1973 he became Chief Executive of a toy manufacturing company, Berwick Timpo Ltd and, between 1980 and 1996, founded and became Executive Chairman of the hugely successful Bluebird Toys plc, which made sales of nearly £100m and a cash balance of £35m within 12 years. He was Chairman and President of the British Toy and Hobby Manufacturer’s Association, Chairman of the Trustees of Rendcomb College, Trustee of the Tavistock Clinic Foundation and Trustee of the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

In 1996 he founded the Norman Trust and bought the Roundhosue in the same year to rebuild it into a state of the art creative centre and a vibrant arts and cultrual venue. The Roundhouse reopened in 2006 and in 2007 Torquil stood down as Chair and became President. He was awarded the CBE in 2002, and a Knighthood in 2007 for his exceptional leadership and support of the Roundhouse.Torquil was a true visionary, who brought so much joy to this world and he always believed in young people and remained a passionate supporter of the Roundhouse. Without Torquil, the Roundhouse simply would not exist as it does today.

In the words of our CEO and Artistic Director Marcus Davey, “He was an extraordinary business man, a huge advocate for creativity, the arts and young people, and simply a wonderful human being. The Roundhouse is a thriving, living legacy to this one of a kind, brilliant and endlessly generous man.
