Following the release of Professor Peter Fonagy’s independent review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism, the Roundhouse has highlighted the importance of creative spaces in supporting young people.

The findings of the Fonagy Review reflect what youth organisations like the Roundhouse see every day: young people are facing real, complex pressures, and they are being failed by a system which requires them to wait years for a diagnosis just to access basic support.

We strongly back the call for a ‘needs-led’ approach. Spaces like the Roundhouse demonstrate that creative community, youth work, and early access to safe, inclusive environments give young people an immediate sense of purpose, belonging, and support – long before they reach crisis point. Statutory mental health care and community youth infrastructure must work side by side if we are to give this generation genuine hope and stability.

The Young Creatives Commission, established by the Roundhouse in partnership with the Centre for Young Lives, explores how access to creativity and creative spaces can support young people’s wellbeing, development and opportunities.

The Commission’s interim report, which was published in September, calls for youth arts to be given a “sporting chance.”
