Blondie’s gig at the Roundhouse in 1978 was a catalyst for the band’s UK break. For young Londoners living in a time of mass unemployment and widespread dissatisfaction, new wave’s visceral, punkish vibes chimed with young people just as The Beatles and flower power had for the generation before. Debbie Harry – along with partner Chris Stein a pioneer of the new wave scene – has been a mainstay of popular music and an inspiration to countless front-women in an industry that has been largely male-dominated over the past 50 years.

This series of activities will enable pupils to discover the historical context of women in music in the 1970s compared to the present day, plus develop core English skills.
