Building on the success of their virtual 15th birthday celebration in 2020, UK Black Pride is back with a three-day digital weekend. Broadcast live from the famed stage of the Roundhouse, UK Black Pride’s communities can expect a weekend of conversations, performance and workshops, with a programme aimed at providing space for LGBTQI+ people of colour to express themselves.
UK Black Pride was founded in 2005 and has since become Europe’s largest pride celebration for LGBTQI+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American and Middle Eastern-descent. Alongside an annual pride celebration that centres the experiences, feelings and safety of the communities they represent, UK Black Pride also advocates for the spiritual, mental and emotional health of LGBTQI+ people of colour across the UK.
Speaking on their decision behind a theme of Love and Rage to mark 2021’s celebrations, Lady Phyll, UK Black Pride’s co-founder and executive director, says, “We’ve seen firsthand over the past year our communities’ persistent commitment to each other; the ways we show up, in big and small ways, is nothing short of inspiring. We continue to show what it means to love, to love hard and to love against the odds. We are also raging, disappointed and tired. Our communities continue to be overlooked and undervalued, tokenised. Our 2021 theme claps back against the many ways we are told who we are allowed to be, and how to grieve, love and rage. We will not be quiet, we will not be meek. We will be heard, and we will be loud.”
Love and Rage 2021 will be streamed live on ukblackpride.org.uk
