Round The Houses 2021
On Saturday 19 June, over 60 people stretching from Greenwich to Cumbria, Hounslow to Hampstead, South London to North London, Scotland, Wales and even across the pond in the USA, took part in our Round The Houses Challenge.
What did we have to do? Walk 36 miles in one day in aid of our work with young people. These vital funds will support our ongoing commitment to providing a diverse youth programme at the Roundhouse and championing a pipeline of talent into the creative industries and beyond. You can find out more about this work here and how you can still support us.
Quite the day descended upon our Round The Houses walkers. From aching ankles to medicinal pints at the half way point, our participants battled the elements from all across the UK and beyond (in the US!). It’s safe to say it was not glamorous at all times, with testy coastal winds and mountainous terrain for some of us; at one point even our CEO was at risk of being chased through a field by an enthusiastic herd of cattle (Hope you ‘moooved’ out the way Marcus!). As the day continued, questions of ‘Are we there yet?’ and ‘Hydration in the form of that pub over there sounds like a good idea’ came through, with the mantra towards the home stretch being “Food. Bath. Bed.” But lo and behold, by the end of the day, routes were completed, celebrations were had and map searches to the nearest pub lunch were made. It was a staggering effort by all and truly a day to be proud of, all in aid of supporting our worthy cause…
With such a whirlwind of a year and the pandemic’s impact on our youth unemployment level in particular, the Roundhouse is looking to take a bold and impactful leap with new, ground-breaking Creative Talent Development programmes. We look to provide opportunities through which our young people can develop their employability skills, build confidence, connect with others in their situation and better understand their potential career pathways.
In light of this, we are proud to say that so far, our walkers have helped us to raise a total of over £400,000 in funds and counting! This is a fantastic achievement and we cannot wait to see the final figure that we will reach.
Marcus Davey, our CEO and Artistic Director shares his experience:
I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our wonderful donors and supporters for their participation and generosity in the Round the Houses Challenge! It has been an immensely tough year for so many people and especially young people who were already marginalised and excluded by society, but through the incredible achievements of the Challenge, the Roundhouse can continue to provide the much needed support to the young people that we work with. Huge thanks.
We’d like to extend a massive thank you to all our walkers, supporters and donors so far for raising this incredible sum in support of Round The Houses and helping us carry on our work with young people. Until the next Round The Houses Challenge!
