Voices Now: Stephen Layton and The Holst Singers

Voices Now: Stephen Layton and The Holst Singers

26 Mar 2011 / Roundhouse Main Space

Watch live here

The Holst Singers, one of the UK’s leading choirs, along with their conductor Stephen Layton, explore music inspired by folk-song from the UK and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Stephen Layton is well-known for his performances of both English and Eastern European music, and has been hugely successful in bringing composers such as Veljo Tormis to UK audiences. This performance follows the choir’s critically acclaimed CD release of Tormis’ music, which lead to an invitation to perform his music in Estonia.

The performance also features music by English composers Vaughan Williams and Holst, with a world premiere of new arrangements of folksongs by young British composer Stuart Hancock.

Holst – Hymns from the Rig Veda

Stuart Hancock – Folksong Suite (Voices Now Commission – World Premiere)

Vaughan Williams – Three Shakespeare Songs

Veljo Tormis – Two Songs after Ernst Enno

Vytautas Miškinis – Angelis suis Deus

Ēriks Ešenvalds – Long Road

Holst – The Evening Watch

Stephen Layton and his superlative choir deliver an inspiring programme of a cappella choral works by the Estonian composer (Veljo Tormis)” The Times

Female vocal trio Juice are constantly finding new ways to use the human voice – something they do with wit, irreverence and a big dose of virtuosity. This is new vocal music to exercise the ears... from throat-singing and human percussion to ethereal harmonies.

Juice present a programme of their own material and new works especially written for them – drawing on world, pop, jazz, folk and experimental classical music.

In everything they sang... their virtuosity was never for a second in doubt.” The Guardian
