Olympic Torch Relay at the Roundhouse

Olympic Torch Relay at the Roundhouse

26 Jul 2012 - 26 Jul 2012

The Roundhouse will be the starting venue for the Camden leg of the Olympic Torch Relay on it’s penultimate day, July 26. The iconic arts & music venue has partnered with Camden Council to curate some of the activities occurring in Camden to mark the occasion.

Prior to the torch’s arrival at the Roundhouse, the venue will host outdoor power stilt performers interacting with the assembled crowds by The Exhibitionists from 6.15am. The torch will arrive at the Roundhouse at 6.38am, when it will make its way through the building accompanied by a mass choral performance by 75 singers from Camden-based community choirs. The peformance will be led by the Roundhouse Choir , an exciting ensemble of singers aged 16-25 that has previously collaborated with Meta Meta, Amandla Esandla, The Magnets, Mark Ronson, Boy George, Filament Theatre Company, Ghosts You Echo and Spiritualized and whose far-reaching repertiore includes music from Afro-Cuban Orishas, pop, spirituals, music from South Africa and Namibia, and original material. The choirs’ performance will culminate in a spectacular six-song set in front of the Roundhouse as the torch emerges.

Performers from the Roundhouse’s creative programme for 11 to 25 year-olds will also entertain spectators elsewhere along the relay route until 9.40am, with young musicians and hula troupe The Majorettes (led by La Soiree's Marawa the Amazing) performing at St Pancras’ International, and emerging singer-songwriter James Craise playing at Granary Square.

Roundhouse is proud to collaborate with new international circus ensemble The Exhibitionists, assembled in partnership with the Roundhouse for the Exhibition Road Show. The Exhibitionists have curated a spectacular circus performance featuring Cyr Wheel, acrobatics and hand-balancing, which will mark the arrival and handover of the torch at St Pancras’ Station.

These events have been produced by Roundhouse Staff and 2012 Culture Squad Outdoor Apprentice Producer Evelyn Nnabuife, whose placement is jointly hosted by Roundhouse and the GLA.
