Atongo Zimba, Sura Susso + special guests

Atongo Zimba, Sura Susso + special guests

21 Jul 2012 - 21 Jul 2012

Due to unforeseen circumstances, FORWARD regrets to inform you that Carlou D will not be able to appear for the scheduled Q&A or live performance at the Roundhouse on 21 July. Carlou D is very sorry he cannot attend and apologises to all of his supporters who were looking forward to the events.  However FORWARD have secured Atongo Zimba and Sura Susso as a replacement so the Fundraising concert will continue with previously-confirmed performances from WEIRD MC and Seye. We will, of course, refund all payments for the Q&A but hope you will still join us for a night of amazing African music and to support the work of FORWARD

Atongo Zimba is a singer and koliko/molo player (two-stringed calabash lute) born in the savannahs of northern Ghana's Bolgatanga region. He sings in Frafra, Pidgin English, Hausa, Twi and Ga. He has graced the stage as the opening act for Fela Kuti at the Kuti Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, and has performed with the likes of Manu Dibango, Hugh Masekela, Francis Fuster, Angelique Kidjo, Osibisa to name but a few! With the hit song ‘No Beer in Heaven’ and internationally released album ‘Savannah Breeze’, we are honoured he will perform at FORWARD’s fundraising concert. He is also joined by Sura (Surahata) Susso.

Sura (Surahata) Susso was born into a griot family in Bakoteh, Western Gambia (Griots are cultural figures in society across West Africa who carry the cultural knowledge and identity of the people). Sura is a master of the Kora (African harp) and has performed with great artists such as his brother Sekou Keita and Baaba Maal. With his solo album ‘Sila Kang’ under his belt Sura now travels the world sharing the beauty of his Kora playing and FORWARD is excited and honoured to have him join us for our fundraising concert.

Special guests: Seye and WEIRD MC

Seye made a name for himself playing guitar for big name pop artists such as Paloma Faith, The Noisettes and Ellie Goulding. Now he’s going it alone and ‘White Noise’ is the first offering from a formidable and multi-cultural new talent. Seye’s sound is a melting pot of colourful music and electronic beats, pulled together with a pure pop sensibility.

WEIRD MC is an Artiste, Lyricist, Producer and Composer whose sound is a hybrid of HipHop/Afrocentricity/Club Essence plus anything undefined. A UN peace ambassador and Nigeria's biggest female Hip Hop act.

FORWARD (Foundation for Women’s Health, Research & Development)

An African Diaspora women led UK campaign and support charity dedicated to advancing and safeguarding the sexual and reproductive health and rights of African girls and women.  FORWARD’s key areas of work are: female genital mutilation (FGM)child marriage and related rights abuses of girls and young women. FORWARD works in the UK, Europe and Africa to help change practices and policies that affect access, dignity and wellbeing.
