Street Circus Programme

In 2010 the Roundhouse launched the Street Circus Programme, working with professional circus company Circolombia and with schools, youth groups and individuals to offer contemporary circus workshops fusing acrobatics and circus skills with street culture. In these workshops, 11 - 19 year-olds work with some of the best local and international circus performers to develop their skills and create performances.

In April 2011, 35 young people took to the Roundhouse Main Stage to perform in front of an audience of 1500 people in a showcase preceding Circolombia's contemporary circus production Urban. Some of this group have now gone on to form a company of young circus artists, who will perform at the Roundhouse as part of CircusFest 2012.

Practising circus arts has obvious physical and health benefits, but the social benefits are also noticeable. Using circus as a tool for engagement is a major part of the programme, as participants are required to work together in a meaningful way, supporting each other to develop confidence and trust in themselves and in each other.
