Project dates: 2016

In 2008, we launched our first-ever Poetry Slam – an annual chance for poets aged 16-25 to go head to head in front of a live audience and an expert panel in a tussle for the title of Slam Champion.

Having developed this model, we’re now sharing what we’ve learnt and developing sister slams with international partners.

In 2016 we supported Raw Voices and Haven for Artists to develop the first Beirut Poetry Slam 2016 for young Lebanese poets. The event included a preliminary three-day workshop for all of the participants, led collaboratively by UK and Lebanese poets, who also judged the slam. The project ended with an evaluation process that fed into initial plans for an improved Beirut Poetry Slam in 2018.

Furthermore, the winner of the inaugural Beirut Poetry Slam will go on to take part in the Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2017.

15 poets from Beirut took part in the week long workshop and Beirut Poetry Slam performance.
